敵性語は圧力を受けた一般民間人の自己規制によって排斥された。国民が「高等教育の現場における英語教育を取りやめるべき」と内閣総理大臣東條英機陸軍大将へ要求したこともある。東條はこれを国会において「英語教育は戦争において必要である」として拒否した^[1]。ただし日本国内を覆っていた空気に影響されてか、英語教育は縮小している。これら敵性語運動は対米英戦たる太平洋戦争の戦意高揚運動のひとつだった。
